Green Schools

Green Schools

The Green Schools programme promotes long-term, whole-school action for the environment.  Green-Schools is a student-led programme with involvement from the wider community.
Caragh NS is a ‘Green School’.
We have taken part in the Green Schools programme for many years. To date we have worked on Waste Management, Energy Conservation, Water Conservation, Travel and most recently Biodiversity . We have a Green School’s Committee that meets regularly.

Every year countless pieces of crisp packets end up in landfill sites across Ireland. We are working with Terra Cycle to put an end to this.  The Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme allows us to recycle our crisp packets and prevent them from ending up in landfill. Not only are we helping the environment, but the waste  we recycle also helps to fund our Green School projects.

By taking charge of battery recycling  we  (and  our families) learn about the importance of recycling to protect the environment and support Laura Lynn.  Recycling waste batteries ensures that precious materials can be recovered for re-use in manufacturing and dangerous waste is disposed of safely, protecting the future of our planet. Every Friday our Green Committee take charge of collections .

In 2020 / 2021 School Year we will be applying for our 6th Green Flag award for Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste

Ecobricks
Making Ecobricks is no substitute for reducing plastic waste!  However, it’s a  great way to raise awareness about  plastic.  Making ecobricks provides an  important insight into how much plastic we are using. As a result of our aim to pack each piece of soft plastic waste into plastic bottles, we realised how much unnecessary waste we were creating. Since we began making ecobricks each class takes  a  more  active role in recycling. They can be used to make little stools , benches etc.  Green School members collect these soft plastics on a weekly basis .

School Garden .
Our Green School take great pride in  our school grounds .  Each year we add to our garden  c by planting bulbs , heathers and shrubs.  We maintain our Insect Hotel , keep a watchful on our Pond  in a Barrell  and  carefully watch for any life in our Log Pile.  Every year, every pupil  in our school takes part in our  Spring Clean . We organise this event to link up  with Caragh  Tidy Towns in  a community effort to keep our village and school tidy
